Coney Island Bialy Bakers
Co., Inc. was started in 1920 by Grandpa Morris Rosenzweig. Grandpa Morris
and his brothers immigrated to the United States from Bialystock, Poland,
and brought with them their knowledge of a local soft yeast bread known
as Bialystoker Kuchens. Kuchen is the German word for cake.
The original business was started in a basement in
Coney Island, and that is where the Coney Island Bialy Bakery was born.
In 1954, Morris moved the bakery to 2359 Coney Island Avenue, Brooklyn,
NY and opened the first retail bialy bakery.
The business
thrived first under Morris, then his son Don and now his son Steve. Within
a few years, Coney Island Bialys started baking bagels and became the only
store to bake both bialys and bagels on site. Steve learned to make and
bake bialys and bagels and eventually took over the family business when
his father retired. He has made some minor changes to the business but
kept the family recipes intact. He created about 15 more varieties of bagels
and bialys to accommodate the growing tastes of his customers. In 1985,
Steve started a website and a few years later started to take orders over
the internet for shipping around the world. Although the majority of deliveries
were within the United States, he has shipped to the United Kingdom, Canada,
Spain, Israel, South Africa and various islands in the Caribbean. After
September 11, international shipping was halted due to stringent security
measures but shipping throughout the United States continues and it is
through this website that you can continue to receive the best Bialys and
Bagels in the world. |
